Rant: spent $75 on a 'universal' washer drain pump that fit exactly zero machines
Bought it at the supply house in Fresno for a Whirlpool front loader, the guy swore it was cross compatible, and I ate the cost plus two hours of swearing before I just ordered the OEM one, so what's your rule for when a generic part is worth the gamble?
Had the same thing happen with a dishwasher pump last spring, the cross reference chart said it worked for like 40 models and mine was on the list, but the mounting bracket holes were off by maybe a quarter inch. I drilled them out and got it in, felt pretty proud of myself, then it leaked from the seal two weeks later and flooded the cabinet. The guy at the parts counter told me the aftermarket ones are made in the same factory, but I'm not buying that story anymore. Now I just look up the OEM number myself and order it online, takes five minutes and I know it'll fit. The only time I gamble on generic is when the part is cheap enough that I won't care if I have to eat it.
