New VFD vs old relay swap, took the cheap route and ate the cost

Had a commercial dryer at a laundromat in Akron that kept tripping the breaker. I had to pick between replacing the whole VFD for $680 or just swapping the old start relay for $45. I went cheap, figured the relay was the obvious fail point, but it turned out the motor windings were shorting out. Lasted 2 days before it fried the new relay too, then I had to buy the VFD anyway plus lose a Saturday doing the swap twice. Has anyone else gotten burned trying to save money on a part only to find the real issue was deeper?
