Finally cracked that Whirlpool dryer squeak after 3 visits and a $40 part
Got a call back in March from a lady over on Sycamore Street who said her dryer sounded like a bird trapped in a tin can. I figured easy money, swapped the drum rollers, charged her $180, and figured that was that. She calls me two weeks later, same noise, so I go back and this time I replace the belt too, another $95. Squeak comes back a month after that and I'm starting to feel like a guy who can't fix a dryer, which stings when you've been turning wrenches on appliances for 11 years. Last Tuesday I finally pulled the whole drum out and sat it on her garage floor and just stared at it, and there it was, the rear drum seal was dried out and rubbing, a $40 part I never even thought to look at because I kept chasing the rollers. Swapped it in about 20 minutes and she's called me twice since to say it's dead quiet, and she's sending her sister my way. Any of you ever get so locked into one diagnosis that you miss the obvious worn seal right in front of you?
