Dropped $180 on a refrigerant scale that sits in my van doing nothing, and I want my money back
I bought a digital charging scale about 8 months ago because I kept seeing techs online swear you can't do sealed system work without one. Spent $180 on it and I think I've pulled it out twice. Here's the thing, on 90% of the fridges I touch I can weigh in the charge by watching the can and my gauges, and it comes out dead on. The scale mostly just slows me down. I even did a side by side on a Whirlpool side by side in a customer's kitchen in Frisco two weeks ago, weighed it in with the scale, then checked with my old method, same numbers. So now this thing rattles around behind my seat and I'm out almost two hundred bucks for a paperweight. If you're just starting out and someone tells you the scale is mandatory, borrow one first before you drop the cash. What's the one tool you bought early on that you never actually reach for?
Used to be one of those guys that swore the scale was mandatory for every charge. Then I did basically the same test you did, weighed it in then checked by can weight and gauges, and got the same numbers. Sold mine to a kid starting out and never missed it since.
