Appreciation post: That $300 thermal camera saved my bacon on a weird fridge job

Got a call for a fridge in a rental that was running non-stop but not cooling right. Checked the usual stuff, compressor was fine, fans were spinning. Pulled out this little thermal camera I bought last year for about $300. Scanned the back panel and spotted a cold spot right where the capillary tube runs. Found a tiny pinhole leak in the line set that was letting all the refrigerant out. Without that camera, I would have been guessing for hours. Anyone else find a specific tool that paid for itself on one weird job?

Used to call them toys. Not anymore.

What changed your mind? I had the same shift a few years back. Once you see the work and skill that goes into it, the word "toy" just feels wrong. It's more like collecting art or engineering samples now.

Still feels like toys to me, just expensive ones.
