Question about why so many Amarillo shops are still handing out paper punch cards in 2024
I run a small ice cream shop on 6th Street and for the past 8 months I kept watching folks walk in, ask if we do digital rewards, then leave when I said we only had the paper punch cards. I finally switched to a free Google Wallet loyalty pass through Square last month and our repeat visits jumped from about 40 a month to 118. The thing is, three other owners on my block told me digital rewards are too complicated and their customers are too old for it, which is flat out wrong because half my signups are folks over 55. I know because I watched them do it at my counter. If you are still printing those little cards you are burning money on ink and losing regulars who just forget the card at home. Has anyone else in town made this switch, and did you see the same bump or am I just lucky?
Three other owners on your block are giving you bad advice, and I would bet money none of them actually tried a digital pass before deciding it was too hard. I run the taco place over on Polk and we made the switch last spring, and our repeat visits went from around 55 a month to over 140, which lines up with your jump pretty close. The "too old for it" excuse is the part that gets me, because the folks signing up at my counter are mostly retirees who already have Google Wallet on their phones for airplane tickets and pharmacy stuff. What those owners are really scared of is the setup day, not their customers, since Square and Google walk you through it in about twenty minutes total. Paper cards also have a sneaky cost besides ink, which is that they cap you at one punch per visit and nobody carries them, so people just stop trying. You are not lucky, you just did the obvious thing and your block is going to figure it out a year late.
