Just realized I might be overthinking how people pronounce 'syrup' after hearing three different versions at the diner this morning.
I keep noticing people say 'seer-up', 'sir-up', or 'sur-up' for the same bottle of maple syrup, and now I'm wondering if there's actually a correct way or if I'm just fixating on a tiny detail that doesn't matter at all.

That's a solid observation, makes you wonder if it's a regional thing. Which part of the country were you in when you heard these? I bet the pronunciation maps pretty closely to where people grew up. It's one of those words that shows how much accent shapes everyday talk.

My midwest family always said "sir-up" so that's my default. I stopped worrying about it after a waiter in Vermont corrected my pronunciation, then brought me the exact same bottle. It's just one of those words with a few accepted versions.
