Shoutout to the $18 tube of caulk I almost skipped, because my Nob Hill porch has stayed dry through two big storms
I figured the cheap stuff was just as good until a guy at the True Value on Central said the $18 siliconized tube would outlast my $6 one by years, and after two monsoon seasons on my west facing porch it has not cracked once, so now I want to know what other small upgrades people swear by around here.

The $18 tube lasting through two monsoon seasons is the part that gets me. I did the same thing on my back steps last spring, grabbed the siliconized stuff instead of the basic latex. Watched it through one summer and a nasty hail storm and it still looks brand new. Worth every penny when you don't have to scrape and redo it every year.
