My uncle's advice about stucco patches was completely backwards

My uncle Bill told me to just slap new stucco over the old cracked stuff on my garage in Edmonton. He said it would save me time and money. I did it last summer and by October the whole patch fell off in a chunk. Now I got to chip out all the old loose material and do it right with diamond mesh. Anyone else get bad advice from a family member that cost them more in the long run?

Used to think family advice was gold just because they'd been around longer, but this changed my mind hard. Your uncle meant well but stucco needs a solid base or it's just gonna pop off again, you found that out the expensive way. Now you know to trust the process over someone's shortcut, even if it takes more time up front.

I read somewhere that even old school contractors say you can't cheat the base coat or it'll cost you double later. Your story lines up with that pretty perfectly.
