I watered my lawn every single evening for 3 summers and a guy in Lethbridge finally called me out
So I'm standing in my front yard in Lethbridge last June, hose in hand at like 8pm, and my neighbor Dave walks over and goes 'you know you're just feeding the fungus right?' I had no clue what he meant. Turns out watering at night here leaves the grass wet for hours, and with our cool Alberta evenings that's basically a welcome mat for dollar spot and red thread. I had been doing this every summer since we bought the place in 2019, wondering why I kept getting these brown patches that I blamed on heat. Dave pulled up a patch of my sod and showed me the fuzzy white stuff growing right at the soil line. I switched to watering at 5am instead and cut back to twice a week, deep soaks only. Two months later the patches were gone and my water bill dropped by about $40 a month. Has anyone else had a neighbor drop a truth bomb on them like that, or am I the only one who was basically watering my lawn wrong for three straight summers?
Man, this is such a real thing and it happens everywhere, not just lawns. We just do stuff on autopilot for years because nobody ever told us different. Like my buddy who spent a decade putting his bread in the fridge thinking it stayed fresh longer, till a baker told him that's why it always went stale and rubbery. Or people who scrub their cast iron with dish soap for years until someone finally says something. The wild part is Dave probably watched you do this for three summers before he said a word, which means other folks saw it too and just minded their own business. Anyway, 40 bucks a month back in your pocket plus a green lawn? That's a win all around.
