A home inspector in Red Deer told me to quit digging down by my foundation, and he was right
Honestly I had been scraping the dirt away from my basement wall for two summers because it looked messy up against the siding, and I figured a bare strip of soil was better for the house. Last spring I paid $475 for an inspection before listing, and the guy took one look at the trench I had going and asked why I was giving water a free path to the footing. He said the ground should slope away from the wall at about a 6 degree fall over the first 6 feet, not get dug out. Ngl it stung because I had spent a good 20 hours on that little project with a shovel and a wheelbarrow. I filled the low spot back in with packed clay and seeded it, and the damp smell in my cold room went away by August. What I keep kicking myself over is that I never asked anyone before grabbing the shovel. Has anyone here had a similar thing where a pro pointed out you were fixing the wrong problem?
