Hot take: I stopped judging new guys by how fast they grab a wrench and started watching how they read a manual
Three weeks ago we got a new hire in the hangar out at Van Nuys and I figured he was slow because he spent 20 minutes on a single torque spec before touching anything. I caught myself getting annoyed until I watched him catch a wrong part number that I would have bolted on without a second thought. Turns out he was cross checking the IPC against the work card, which is something I stopped doing around year two because I thought I had every task memorized. That same week I had to redo a hydraulic line because I went off memory and grabbed the wrong fitting size, cost us about two hours of down time on a Thursday night. So I guess the kid taught me something without saying a word, the manual is not training wheels, it is the job. Anyone else notice the old timers who still look everything up are the ones who never seem to get bit?
