A guy in the hangar next to ours said 'that panel has been off more times than it's been on' and I haven't stopped thinking about it
I was grabbing a torque wrench from the shared box at our hangar in Bakersfield three weeks ago when I heard an A&P from the next bay say that about an access panel on a 172 he was working. He wasn't even talking to me, just muttering to himself while he counted screws, but it stuck with me all day. I went back to the panel I was doing on our own bird and counted the fasteners, and sure enough, four of them had stripped heads and two were mismatched, which told me somebody had been in there way more than the logbook let on. That got me wondering how many small problems I've been signing off because the panel went back on smooth, not because I actually looked at what was underneath. The next morning I started keeping a little notebook of every panel I pull and why, and in three weeks I've already found one chafed wire bundle that nobody had flagged. It bugs me that it took a stranger's throwaway comment to make me slow down like that. How do you guys track how often a panel or component gets pulled, or do you just trust the logbook and move on?
