When my phone died on a ridge, I questioned using tech for hikes.

Tech makes trails easy to follow, but it can fail when you need it most.

Friend's GPS once led us to a cliff, not the trail.

Ever check what map type it was set to? Sounds more like someone picked "shortest route" over "hiking trails" lol.

That "led us to a cliff" bit is classic, @the_harper. Tech can really leave you hanging sometimes. I still trust a paper map for the real backcountry stuff.
