Weekend shale hunts keep my anxiety in check

I was feeling overwhelmed with work stress a few months back. My brother told me to try getting into geology as a hobby. I started spending Sundays looking at shale outcrops near the old quarry. Focusing on the fine layers and color bands made my worries fade. I even bought a guidebook to learn more about sedimentary rocks. Now, I plan these trips to clear my head. Has anyone else used rock study to help with mental health?

My cousin got me into fossil hunting in chalk beds, and I get the same effect. There's something about the slow, careful work of splitting layers that just shuts off the mental noise. It feels less like a hobby and more like necessary maintenance sometimes.

Seriously, this is SO true. I started collecting river stones after a bad breakup and it saved my sanity. My big tip is to always go with a simple goal, like finding one piece with clear lines. That focus pushes out all the noisy thoughts. The physical act of looking closely just grounds you. It’s like your brain can only handle the rock in front of you, not the stress. That routine turns into your own quiet space.

Ngl @nathan_king28, that's a solid plan. Sounds like a rock-solid way to avoid your actual problems for a while.

Those lines you're finding might trace old scars too.
