My old way of checking a governor rope was to just give it a tug, but after a close call on a 1980s Otis in a Tacoma hotel last month, I now use a proper tension gauge every single time.

Has anyone else found a specific tool that completely changed a routine check for them?

A tension gauge seems like overkill for a quick check. A good visual inspection and a solid pull have always been reliable for me.

A torque wrench on escalator step bolts saved my coworker's knee.
