That 2am AFCI breaker call taught me a hard lesson about shared neutrals

Last Tuesday I got dragged out of bed for a tripping breaker in a finished basement in Portland. Customer said it started after they plugged in a space heater. I spent an hour chasing a bad breaker, swapping it out, and it STILL tripped. Turns out a previous handyman had tied two circuits onto one neutral, and the AFCI was catching the imbalance. I learned to check for shared neutrals BEFORE swapping any hardware, especially on older homes. Has anyone else run into this on a service call where the fix was way weirder than the symptom?
