Serious question, has anyone else had a pump expert tell them they're running too fast?

An old timer at the yard in Mobile watched my setup for about ten minutes and said, 'Son, you're starving that pump. You're at 1800 rpm but your suction line is too long.' I dropped it to 1450 rpm and added a bigger foot valve. The difference in wear on the impeller after three months is crazy. What's the biggest 'you're doing it wrong' tip you've gotten on the water?

Unless he was just trying to sell a new pump.

Wait, what if the old timer was just stuck in his ways? Sometimes running a pump faster gets you more flow for the same wear if your whole system is set up right. Maybe the real fix was just the bigger foot valve, not the slower speed.
