Remember when we used to run clamshells without GPS?
Back in the 90s on the Mississippi we did everything by hand and eye. Now new guys come in with tablets and still manage to miss the mark. Am I the only one who thinks learning without the screens made us better operators?

Nod along all you want, but those compasses were a pain to reset after a storm. You could learn the river by feel with a compass, sure, but GPS just speeds up the learning curve for the new guys. The real problem is they don't develop the instinct for reading water and current without the screen holding their hand. I'd rather have a greenhorn who can smell a sandbar coming than one who just watches the map.
