Tried drafting my garage setup on graph paper and it got rid of all the guessing.

Hey, that's smart! I always use blue painter's tape to mock things up on the floor first.

When I redid my garage last year, I used that blue tape to plan out where all the shelves would go. I mean, I had this whole grid laid out on the floor, but then my dog decided it was a new toy. He pulled up half the lines before I could even start drilling, so I had to redo everything freehand. Idk, maybe it's just me, but now I double-check the tape isn't too interesting for pets.

Did you end up sticking with the tape method after that, @wade915, or did the dog incident make you change your planning style completely? I guess you could still use it but just block off the area. Sometimes the hard way is how you learn what actually works.
