Rant: My $80 stud finder was useless until a sparky showed me the trick

I was hunting a stud for a TV mount in my garage and this electrician working next door laughed at me, said knock on the drywall and listen for the solid thud instead of trusting the gadget. Tried it on three spots, found the studs in two minutes, now I only break out the finder for weird ceilings. Has anyone else ditched their fancy tool for the old school method?
