Paint sprayer vs roller, the numbers shocked me

I kept hearing everyone swear by sprayers for fencing, so I finally rented one from Home Depot for $78. Took me 4 hours to mask off everything and another 3 to actually spray, plus cleanup. Then I rolled the other side of the same fence with a 18 inch roller and it took 5 hours total, including prep. The sprayer used way more paint too, like 2 extra gallons on a 200 foot fence. I get the smooth finish argument but for a normal person doing one project, the roller wins on time and cost. Has anyone else done a side by side test like this or am I the only one who thinks sprayers are overhyped?
