Just read that the average DIYer spends about $4,000 a year on projects, which seems wild to me.
Saw that figure in a survey from a home improvement magazine. I guess if you add up all the little trips to the hardware store, the bigger stuff like flooring or a deck, it might get there. But man, that's a car payment. I'm trying to budget for redoing my bathroom vanity and that number has me second-guessing every single thing I put in the cart. How do you all keep your project costs from spiraling? Do you set a firm budget or just kind of go with it?

Forget the average, that's crazy. I just make a list and try to stick to it, but the little add-ons always get me lol.

My list last week had five items and I still spent fifty bucks extra. @the_thomas, what's the worst add-on that's ever snuck into your cart? Mine was a fancy jar of olives that cost more than the chicken.

Jennyh55's olives are nothing next to my impulse-buy truffle salt.
