TIL the guy at the hardware store in Fresno said my caulk job was the worst he'd seen in 20 years
I was picking up a tube of caulk at a small Ace Hardware in Fresno two weeks ago, and the older guy behind the counter asked what I was working on. I told him I was sealing up a tub surround that had been leaking for a while, and he asked to see a photo. I pulled one up on my phone, and he just stared at it for a second and said, "Son, that is the worst caulk job I have seen in 20 years of working here." Turns out I had been laying it way too thick and not smoothing it at all, so it was peeling up on the edges. He walked me through the whole thing right there at the counter, showed me the little plastic smoothing tool I'd never seen, and told me to wet my finger with dish soap instead of spit. I spent 3 hours redoing the whole thing the next day and it actually looks like a real person did it. Has anyone else had a hardware store guy just completely wreck them with the truth and then end up being right?
That dude basically gave you a free class right there at the register, which is wild when you think about it. Funny part is those old hardware guys never say it mean, they just state it like a weather report and then hand you the fix. I had a plumbing guy do the same thing to me about my shutoff valve, and honestly I'd rather get the brutal truth than have him nod and let me flood my house.
