My grout float was backwards for 12 years until a tile guy laughed at me

Last month I was retiling my bathroom in Columbus and this contractor walked by while I was pressing grout into the joints. He just stopped and said 'you're using the smooth edge, buddy, flip it over.' I had no clue the rubber float even had two different sides. Turns out the angled edge forces grout deep into the gaps instead of just smearing it on the tile surface. I spent over a decade fighting crumbly joints and cleaning haze off with vinegar, thinking that was just the nature of tile work. Has anyone else discovered they were using a basic tool wrong, or is it just me and my backwards float?
