Rant: I blew off the "stay 3 weeks" rule for my first 2 years and it cost me more than I want to admit
When I started out in 2019, I did the classic thing: 4 cities in 6 weeks, always chasing the next cheap flight. A hostel roommate in Medellin asked me one simple question, "what's the name of your favorite cafe here?," and I couldn't answer because I'd been there 5 days and spent most of it looking at flights. That hit hard. So I switched to a 3 week minimum, and in Lisbon last spring I ended up at the same pastelaria almost every morning, which is where I met the guy who got me two months of steady remote work. Slower travel costs me a bit more per month, but I get way more out of it. Has anyone else tried a firm minimum stay, and what number actually worked for you?
Yes! I did the exact same thing for my first year and a half, and the only thing I have to show for it is a bunch of boarding passes. Two weeks is my number now, and it's long enough that I actually know the name of my cafe.
