Kept burning out every 5 weeks in Chiang Mai, fixed it with two $9 tees from the night market
Everyone in the nomad groups keeps saying you need a $1200 MacBook Air and noise cancelling headphones to work from Bali or wherever, and I bought all that stuff, and I still crashed every 5 weeks like clockwork for almost a year. What actually fixed me was way dumber. I started sleeping with a faded cotton tee stretched over my eyes instead of a sleep mask, the kind they sell two for $9 at the Sunday market in Chiang Mai right next to the mango sticky rice guy. The real piece was that I also forced myself to stay in one place 6 weeks minimum after bouncing through 11 cities in 4 months, which sounds obvious but nobody says it out loud because slow travel gets called boring. My whole problem was light, not wifi. Hostel rooms in Thailand leak light through the curtains at 6am and my brain never learned what morning meant. Now I carry three of those tees and a roll of black tape for the curtain gaps. Anyone else swear by cheap dumb fixes over gear? I want to know what weird little thing worked for you.
Man, the light thing is so real and nobody talks about it. I stayed in a place in Da Nang with those thin white curtains and I was waking up at 5:30 every day feeling like I hadn't slept at all, then crashing hard by week four. What finally worked for me was a cheap blackout curtain liner from Shopee, the kind with the little rings, and I just draped it over whatever rod was there with binder clips. Also tape over the little standby lights on the AC and the TV, those tiny red dots are worse than people think. Six weeks in one spot is the part I wish someone had told me two years ago. All that gear money would have been better spent on slower flights.
