Chiang Mai visa run got shady, now I check every stamp before leaving the office

Last month I did the standard border bounce to Mae Sot and the van driver tried to pocket my passport for an extra 2,000 baht to fast track the queue. I stood my ground, got it back, but he still dropped us at some random booth where the officer kept asking for a fee that wasn't on the official sign. Took 40 minutes and a Thai friend on video call to sort it out. Since then, I photograph my passport page, the entry stamp, and the exact amount shown on the government board before I hand anything over. Has anyone else run into the extra fee shakedown on the Mae Sot route, or is it just the newer drivers testing folks?
