TIL I was scaling my digital paintings from the start and losing all my line detail
I've been doing digital art on and off since 2016 and for most of that time I painted everything at a tiny canvas size, like 800x600, because that's what my old laptop could handle. Last month a guy in a Discord server asked why my linework looked so soft compared to my sketches, and I pulled up my file history to show him my process. Turns out I was painting at that small size and then resizing up at the end for posting, which smeared every edge and killed the crispness I loved in my sketch layer. He said he paints at 3000x3000 minimum and just uses a bigger brush size, then scales down, which is the opposite of what I was doing. I tested it on one piece and the difference was night and day, my lines actually held up when I zoomed in. Five years of mushy edges because I never thought about canvas size at the start. How do you all pick your canvas dimensions when you sit down to paint?
