My "quick" color sketch took 5 hours and I found the fix by accident

I was prepping a character bust piece for a showcase gallery and kept fighting with muddy skin tones, so I tried switching my brush opacity to 40% and layering 6 thin passes instead of 2 thick ones. The colors finally popped like I'd been hoping for, no more dried-out overlays or gray shadows. Has anyone else found that forcing yourself to slow down with layers beats any fancy blending brush?

Did the 40% opacity fix work on every piece or just that one?
