Can we talk about how I almost missed the best advice my dad ever gave me because I rolled my eyes at his dumb joke?
About 4 months ago my dad told me a joke at the dinner table that I had heard maybe 50 times before, the one about the scarecrow winning an award because he was outstanding in his field. I laughed just to be nice and he looked at me and said the joke is the warm up, the real talk comes next. I blew it off because I was 27 and figured I already knew everything. Then 3 weeks later I lost my job at a warehouse in Dayton when they cut 12 of us in one day. My dad called me that night and instead of some big speech he just told me another corny joke about a broken pencil being pointless. I was mad at first, then I realized what he was doing. He was keeping me talking so I would not sit alone in my own head all night. We ended up on the phone for 2 hours, mostly laughing at dumb stuff, and somewhere in there he told me he got laid off twice before I was born and never told anyone because he was embarrassed. That night did more for me than any serious talk we ever had. So what is the dumb joke someone in your family uses to get you to actually open up?
