Two-factor app vs. text codes, I picked wrong and paid for it
Last month I finally set up 2FA on my main email, and I had to choose between an authenticator app or SMS codes. I went with text codes because I figured it was simpler, no extra app to mess with. Then my phone number got ported by a scammer pretending to be me at the carrier store in Phoenix. They reset my password with those text codes, wiped my cloud backups, and locked me out for 3 days. Has anyone else switched to an authenticator app after getting burned by SMS? How long did it take you to trust it?

Switching to an authenticator app right after getting hit is like putting on a seatbelt after a crash, it feels late but you still do it. Took me about two weeks before I stopped checking my phone for texts that never came, but now I trust it more than my own carrier. The app holds the keys, so even if someone steals your number, they get nothing but a dead end.
