DAE lock their card the second they open a banking app, after a $412 hit from a skimmer at a gas station in Dallas
I got skimmed at a pump on I-35 and the fraud charge cleared before I even got home, so now I freeze the card in the app every time I fuel up and unfreeze it 10 seconds later. It's saved me twice since March, but has anyone found a way to stop the skimmer itself instead of just locking the card after?
Wait, the charge cleared before you even got home? That is what gets me. Like, you were still in the car driving and the money was already gone. That means the skimmer is sending your card info somewhere instantly, or these guys are just sitting on a laptop nearby running cards the second they get them. Scary part is locking the card only helps after the fact, the number is already out there and they can just sell it to someone else. From what I have read, the real fix is stuff like tap to pay at the pump since it makes a one time code instead of your actual card number, but half the older pumps in Dallas still don't have that working. I just wiggle the card reader now and check if it looks loose, which probably does nothing, but it makes me feel better.
