Update: I finally tried dipping pizza crust in ranch, and I get it now
I always thought ranch with pizza was a Midwest thing that ruined a good slice, so I turned it down for the better part of a decade. Last Friday I was at a friend's place in Portland watching the game, and all he had in the fridge was a half-empty bottle of Hidden Valley, so I just went with it on a plain cheese slice. Something about the cold tang against the hot grease and crust just works, and I ate four slices that way without even thinking. Now I'm wondering what else I've been ignoring for no real reason. What food combo did you write off for a long time before actually giving it a shot?
Have you tried it on a slice that's already really good, though? To me ranch is fine on cheap delivery pizza, but on a good hot slice from a real oven it just covers up what you paid for. I'll take mine plain and save the ranch for the carrot sticks.
