Why does nobody talk about how fast your hook time drops when you start using a bailout bottle drill every single day?
When I started diving out of Morgan City about 3 years ago, my hook times were averaging around 4 minutes in poor vis and I thought that was just normal for a new guy on the crew. Then an old hand named Dale pulled me aside after a job and said I was wasting time fumbling with gear because I never practiced the motions dry. So I started running a bailout bottle drill on deck every morning before we splashed, just 10 minutes of going through the whole sequence with my eyes closed. After about 6 weeks my hook time dropped to under 2 minutes and the supervisor noticed enough to put me on the deeper jobs. The weird part is the change did not come from getting stronger or faster hands, it came from not thinking about each step anymore. I could feel the difference the first time I had a real emergency drill and my hands just did the thing on their own. Anyone else here seen that kind of drop from dry land reps, or am I just late to something everyone already knew?
