I did 14 purge welds on a food plant job in Fresno last month and every single one passed X-ray on the first try, which never happens for me. Half the crew says purging is a waste of argon on anything under schedule 40, the other half won't strike an arc without it. Where do you all draw the line on purge gas for pipe under 2 inches?
Purging on small pipe is dirt cheap compared to one failed X-ray, so I don't get the guys calling it a waste. A bottle of argon lasts forever on 2 inch and under, and the gas cost is nothing next to cutting out a weld and redoing it. Half inch tube is where I'll sometimes skip it, but anything carrying product or getting shot, that line stays put.
