A super in Denver told me to stop using felt for vapor barriers on a tenant fit-out, said it holds moisture against the studs and causes rot. I figured he was just being old school, but we switched to a plastic sheet on the next 12,000 square foot office shell and the humidity readings stayed way down during framing. Has anyone else trusted a random site lead over the spec sheet and come out ahead or eaten the cost?

Wait until you see the difference in a cold snap. That plastic sheet might hold humidity down during the build, but come January, you'll be chasing condensation on the inside face of the sheathing if the AC air temp drops fast. Felt lets the wall breathe a little, so the moisture has somewhere to go. Sounds backwards, but a site lead saved me 40 grand in callbacks on a medical office once. He didn't have a spec sheet, just 30 years of seeing what rot looks like behind drywall.
