Why does nobody talk about how a $20 kitchen scale changed my coffee more than any $150 grinder upgrade
I used to scoop my beans with the plastic thing that came in the grinder bag and eyeball it, and I honestly felt pretty good about my cups for like 3 years. Then my wife got me a cheap digital scale for the kitchen junk drawer and I started weighing beans just to see what my scoop was actually giving me. Turns out my "perfect scoop" was swinging between 14 and 22 grams depending on the bean and how full the bag was, which explained why some days my pour over was great and other days it was straight up bitter mud. I grabbed a bag of Ethiopian from a place here in Sacramento and did 5 cups at exactly 18 grams each, and all 5 came out basically the same for the first time in my life. I felt kind of dumb because I had been blaming my grinder and buying new burrs every few months. The scale sits right on the counter now and my ratio is locked in around 1 to 16, and I can actually taste when the beans are aging instead of guessing. So what's the one cheap thing you guys think gets ignored while everyone spends money on gear? I want to know if I am late to this or if plenty of you are still scooping it like I was.
