Watched a barista in Portland re-weigh my beans mid-pour and it fixed my whole routine
I was sitting at the counter of a small cafe off SE Division in Portland about 3 weeks ago and watched the barista pull the portafilter, weigh the shot, dump it, and start over because it came out 2 grams heavy. She did this twice in a row without any drama, just dumped the shot and went again. I asked her about it and she said she would rather waste 18 grams of coffee than serve me a shot she would not drink herself. I went home and started weighing my shots on a $20 scale I had sitting in a drawer, and my shots stopped tasting bitter overnight. Turns out I was pulling around 42 grams out of 18 grams in, way past where it should be. Anyone else change their whole morning routine after watching someone else work?
