When did you realize your grind was off? Mine took 5 years

I used to think my French press coffee always tasted a bit muddy and bitter, but I figured that was just how it was supposed to be. Then last month my sister visited from Portland and watched me dump in a scoop of pre-ground beans. She just raised an eyebrow and said, "You know that's like floor sweepings, right?" I went out and bought a cheap burr grinder for $30, set it to coarse, and the first cup was a total revelation. Anyone else have a slap-in-the-face moment like that with their setup?
