Tried running my finish pass .005 deeper on a hunch and the chatter vanished
Had a 4140 shaft job on the lathe in my home shop and got nasty chatter on every finish pass, tried speeds, feeds, everything for 2 days. Out of frustration I bumped the finish pass depth from .010 to .015 just to see, and the chatter disappeared completely, surface came out like glass at 320 rpm. My whole theory was wrong, the tool was just rubbing instead of cutting at that shallow depth. Anyone got a rule of thumb for minimum depth of cut on 4140 or do you just feel it out per job?
