Tried to get a heat pump rebate in Columbus and the guy said my attic insulation killed it
So I finally pulled the trigger on a heat pump quote two months ago for my place in Columbus, $9,400 before any rebates, and the whole plan was to stack the federal tax credit with the local utility rebate to knock it down to something I could actually afford. The contractor came out, measured everything, said I was all set, and then the rebate paperwork came back denied. I called the utility to ask why and the lady on the phone said my attic insulation is under R-30, so under their rules the house has to pass an energy audit first before they hand out a dime for the heat pump. Nobody in the sales process said one word about that, they just kept saying oh yeah you'll get the full rebate. So now I'm looking at $2,200 of blown-in insulation plus an $500 audit before the heat pump rebate will even process, which flips the whole math on whether this is worth doing right now. I ended up calling a second company and the estimator there said this happens all the time because the sales guys only care about the equipment sale. Has anyone here gone through the audit first and actually gotten the rebate, or did I just blow my timing trying to get it done before winter?
