Tried a compost swap at the farmers market and the bins got mixed up

Last Saturday I brought two big buckets of food scraps to the market in Portland, one for the community compost and one for the worm farm. I set them down for two minutes to grab a coffee and someone switched the lids. One guy dumped eggshells into the worm bin and the worms started crawling out everywhere. I spent 20 minutes scooping them back while people stared. Has anyone else had a compost station mixup or do most cities handle these better than Portland?

Portland’s got a pretty solid compost program overall, but that market setup sounds like it was asking for trouble. Did they have the bins labeled at all, or were they just plain buckets sitting side by side? I’m curious if the person who switched the lids just grabbed the wrong one by accident or if there was zero signage to tell them apart. In my experience, even a sharpie mark on each lid saves a ton of headache. Also, the worm farm folks probably weren’t too thrilled about the eggshell surprise, even if the worms did make a dramatic exit. Just feels like a simple fix that someone skipped, and you paid for it with your morning coffee.
