Thought I found a $4 banh mi in Houston, ended up getting a free cooking lesson instead
There's this little spot off Bellaire that sells banh mi for $4 and I walked in last Saturday expecting to just grab one and go. The owner saw me eyeing the pate and asked if I'd ever tried making it at home, then spent 20 minutes showing me how she keeps her pork so juicy on a tiny grill. I went back the next day with $8 and walked out with two sandwiches plus a handwritten note on how to pickle the carrots right. Turns out the cheap places are cheap because they've been doing the same thing well for a long time, not because they cut corners. Anyone else got a spot where the owner just starts teaching you stuff out of nowhere?
