Thought my $6 mystery tackle box was garbage until I actually fished it at Lake Murray
Bought one of those cheap grab bag lure boxes at a gas station near Ardmore about 3 weeks ago. Opened it up and honest to god it was all knockoff stuff, weird colors, hooks that looked like they came off a keychain. I almost tossed the whole thing in the trash.
Took it out to Lake Murray anyway because my good box was in my brother's truck. Second cast with some ugly green crankbait that had no brand name on it, I pulled in a 3 pound largemouth. Then another one 20 minutes later. Meanwhile my buddy with his $12 Rapalas got skunked all morning.
I still buy good gear but I'm done assuming price equals bites. Half the stuff in that box flat out worked. Has anyone else had cheap lures outperform their name brand tackle? Or did I just get lucky that one day?
Reminds me of a clearance bin at a Tulsa bait shop where I grabbed a 5 pack of no name white grubs for $2. I caught 14 crappie off one grub at Tenkiller while the guy next to me with a fancy jigging spoon got nothing. The paint finally peeled off after fish number 9 and it still kept working. Sometimes those cheap lures just have a wiggle the fish want and nobody paid a marketing team to mess it up.
