Spent 12 years stretching seams the wrong way until a hallway job in Phoenix set me straight

I always pulled the seam tight with my knees and then ran the power stretcher from the wall, thinking that locked it down. Then last month I had a 60 foot hallway with a pattern that kept grinning no matter how many times I redid it. An old timer walked by, watched me for a minute, and said "you're stretching the carpet, not the seam, go diagonally first." He was right. The seam laid flat in one pass after I changed the angle. How many of you learned a basic move late from a stranger on site?
