MDF baseboards I installed in Denver look like trash after one winter

I put in a whole basement of MDF base in a remodel near Golden last fall and it's already swelling at the seams near the floor. The client keeps their place at 68 degrees but the humidity swings are brutal, and I used a cheap primer instead of shellacking the cut ends first. Did I just skip a step everyone knows, or is MDF just wrong for that climate? Anyone had luck with sealing it different?
