A 2x4 stud costs me $1.47 in materials and the same stud at the yard is $4.80, so I started milling my own
I ran the numbers on a 200 board foot order for a garage shelving job in Akron and the markup came out to almost triple what I pay when I buy rough lumber and run it through my own planer. The thing that got me was time, it took me 4 extra hours to mill everything versus just having it delivered, so I am not sure the savings actually hold up once you count your own labor. For you guys doing bigger jobs, do you still mill your own stock or is buying surfaced lumber just the smarter move at this point?
