Overheard a guy say his new sleeping pad was too warm for summer

I was at a trailhead near Asheville and a guy was telling his friend his fancy insulated pad was making him sweat in 70-degree weather. I've always just bought whatever pad was on sale, but now I'm thinking about temperature ratings. Do you actually need different pads for different seasons?
