Serious question, did a rush job on 40 cabinet doors teach anyone else to slow down?
Back in March a contractor in Franklin pushed me to wrap up 40 shaker doors in four days so he could hit his punch list, and I caved. By day three my raised panel bits were burning maple instead of cutting it, and I caught myself clamping a stile that was a full 1/16 out of square just to keep pace. He ended up rejecting 11 doors at install, and I ate $1,800 in material and a weekend redoing them. Now I quote lead times like they are set in stone, even when a builder gets loud on the phone. What do you all say when a contractor tries to squeeze your schedule?
Been there. What works for me is giving them two dates right up front. One is the real date, the other is the rush date with a number attached to it. Something like "that's a 6 week job, I can do 3 weeks for 40 percent more and you sign off on the schedule in writing." Most of them back off real quick when money gets involved. The ones who don't, they get the real date and they can take it or go find somebody else. Losing one loud builder beats eating 1800 bucks and a weekend every time.
